Columbia Square Historic Rehabilitation

< | >

Originally designed by modernist pioneer William Lescaze, Columbia Square opened in 1938 as CBS’s west coast headquarters and the first purpose-built radio broadcast facility in the US. Columbia Square was designated as a Historic-Cultural Monument in 2009, and the renovation led by House & Robertson followed guidelines for historic rehabilitation established by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The award-winning renovation project includes extensive exterior and interior rehabilitation, focusing on character-defining features such as original façades and interior elements including an iconic six-story open stair in the Radio Building tower, together with all-new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and extensive structural and life safety upgrades. As an integral part of the project, the entry court on Sunset Blvd. was restored as a dynamic public space. The project received California Preservation Foundation’s 2016 Preservation Design Award and the Los Angeles Conservancy’s 2017 Preservation Award.
